Easy Rider

While a few weeks ago Gabe used his little motorcycle and his little car only to sit on, now he enthusiastically moves around on them. We had to bring his car in the house so that he can navigate around the rooms in the mornings and evenings when he cannot go outside.

His steering technique seems to be improving quickly. His favorite stunt: gathering momentum in the living room, aiming at the refridgerator and in the last second taking a sharp right turn to get into the kitchen. There he visits the dishwasher and then backs the car on the same route.

Understanding the Language

Nowadays we frequently run into situations when we realize that Gabe understands perfectly what we tell him or to each other. What really surpirising is that he understands nouns and verbs we do not remember teaching him. It seems that he changed gears in the learning process grabing words from here and there.

Now if we do not want him to understand something we need to switch to English :) (do not forget, our mother tongue is Hungarian).

This might feel unexpected only compared to his understanding of the language a few weeks ago, and our wonder might even feel strange when we will look back in a few weeks or months time. Guess that’s the way it is.

Our Garden

In the past year I received some criticism from Judit regarding our garden that only costs money and time but is mostly useless. Lately, however, it seems that her mind is changing. As the nice summer weather has arrived she spends way more time in the garden with Gabe as previously.

It is generally not advised to expose a little child to direct sunlight under the age of three, and Gabe has quite a sensitive skin (seems to be inherited from my side). And this is where our garden comes into play: although there is not much in there, there are always large shadowy areas where Gabe and Judit can play. It is way more convenient than to go to some place and always hunt for the shadows.

Given the success, next year I might even do some weeding and seed new grass…

The First Year

So here we are at the end of the first year. Looking back I cannot believe how fast Gabe has developed his skills. We had surprises for many of the past 52 weeks… He became a highly intelligent little boy that is just as capable as - if not ahead of - the little mates of his age.

I would attribute most of this success to Judit and her constant daily efforts. I guess Gabe cannot be luckier to have such a little, enthusiastic Mommy as she is. I, on the other hand, could contribute only at the bare minimum - which is quite a disappointment for me.

My lack of time will probably take some tolls among my minor activities - such as this blog. Nevertheless, I try to keep posting something meaningful at least once a month.

Mastering Communications

Gabe with a phone

No, Gabe still does not speak. But he had developed a deep interest in all kinds of phones - cordless, mobile or plain old ones with cords. Interestingly he can distinguish between phony phones and real ones used by Mommy and Daddy. Even old, once-functional phones are not good - I guess its the lights and sounds. We have another prospective engineer in the family…
What I do not like is that this craze developed to the level that when he cannot get a phone he picked right away he becomes close to hysterical. I guess we will have to do something about that sooner than later - this little guy has an iron will…
